Description: WHAT INSPIRED THIS SONG & LYRICS: Based on an article about racism in the Inland Empire, this song is written from the perspective of a 14 year-old African-American girl who moves with her mother and older brother to a community near Lake Elsinore, CA.Crystal Farr chose to move the family there in search of affordable housing, space, room to expand their lives. They were met with threats from local white supremicist groups living on the fringes of the community, and her teenage son was beaten by two fellow students at his new school. Although Crystal likes the community, all this given her second thoughts. She is afraid to even let her kids go to the movies alone. The article is entitled, "Suburban Hate," by Ben Fox, Associated Press, March 13, 2005.I recorded this in my hotel room in Park City, UT, while attending the Sundance Film Festival. I wanted to feature the beautiful snow on the majestic pines outside the window, but it got dark quickly, and I had to turn the camera to Super Night Vision. That's why I have those spooky anime eyes in the vid. Enjoy. On The Shores of ElsinoreCopyright Amy Raasch 2008Guess somebody knows something I don't 'Cause the moving van's outside Next thing I know the skyline is burningThere's ashes in my eyesMama says we are bound for a landWhere the sands are made of goldGonna spread out our lives like a canvasAnd write our dreams in boldI don't know why they call this an empireJust looks like a desert to meMama says all these orange groves and tract homesAre what it looks like to be freeOn the shores of Elsinore we're buildingTrying not to see our hands are tiedBy the shores of Elsinore we're drivingDown the dusty road to paradiseI got so much grease on my elbowsYou don't wanna rub them with yoursNow this sun-stroked land feels like a coal mineA tower without any doorsWhen I was but a wee baby girlMy mama said I was a queenShe said I shall inherit the earthBut this old world feels dirty to meOn the shores of Elsinore we're waiting For a sign to swoop down from the skyBy the shores of Elsinore we're prayingShow us the way to paradiseLeave me your salt for my woundsI won't hold it against youLeave me with manna from the skyIt will melt on my tongue without youI seen you in your red pickup truck With your eyes bleeding like wineCaught you looking when I turn aroundWith your prickly mouth empty and dry I don't know if I'll ever make 18I'm not made of steel or brassBut I'm gonna grow up to be a good soldierIf you'll just let me passOn the shores of Elsinore we're marchingKnowing not when we'll step on a mineBy the shores of Elsinore we're wonderingDid we miss the turn to paradiseTo paradise...
