Description: Jan. 17, 2007 marked the beginning of a new era for this tightly knit community of about 4,500 people living in San Manuel, Ariz. This was once the site of the largest copper mine in the country. The 508-foot-tall Fugitive Stack was built in 1952-53 and the 526-foot-tall Converter Stack was added in 1971. It took more than 300 pounds and only a few seconds to bring the two smelter stacks to the ground. The mine was closed in 1999 and the demolition of the stacks was the last major piece in clean up process.The new skyline is seen as a sign of hope for a prosperous future. BHP Copper has committed more than $120 million to the precedent setting closure of the mine and plant to prepare the land for redevelopment.
