Number Plate Tag Removal
|
Removing those
unneeded oversized number plate tags.
|
One
of the easiest mods you can do to your new Skyline is to
remove the number plate tags at the rear end of the car.
Number plates in Japan are much taller than those in New
Zealand, this is why these are designed this way. However
it's not like they'll ever be used again, and you are
probably best off removing them since they look untidy, as
well as that they are useless dead weight!
This is a mod for R32, R33 and R34's.

First
take off the number plate with the two securing screws on
the face of the plate. Then remove the single bolt at the
base of the plate holder. The holder itself has hinges at
the top. When you have removed the single bolt at the
bottom, you will easily be able to lift this up so it is
horizontal and easy to cut!

From
here it pays to grab something to cover the boot of your car
in case you scratch it or mark it in anyway when cutting off
the useless excess metal. The reason the holder is so big,
is to hold on the larger Japanese number plate, and unless
you are thinking of exporting your car back to Japan, they
will never be used again. I got a friend who has a grinder
to easily cut the tags off. This took about 5 seconds per
tag. You can use a hacksaw. On my old R32 I used a drill to
drill 3 holes in each tag and broke them off.

I
would advise you do it properly. The grinder left only a
small bur, which we ground right down, and then covered with
paint to prevent rust. We then replaced the bolt for the
plate holder, and replaced the number plate.
This looks much better. It may be hard to see, but if you
sit identical cars side by side you will definately pick out
the one that has the tags removed as it looks finished!
